Recovering The Lost Doctrine of the Resurrection

Acts 24:10-16

10 Then Paul, after the governor had nodded to him to speak, answered: "Inasmuch as I know that you have been for many years a judge of this nation, I do the more cheerfully answer for myself,11 "because you may ascertain that it is no more than twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem to worship.12 "And they neither found me in the temple disputing with anyone nor inciting the crowd, either in the synagogues or in the city.13 "Nor can they prove the things of which they now accuse me.14 "But this I confess to you, that according to the Way which they call a sect, so I worship the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the Law and in the Prophets.15 "I have hope in God, which they themselves also accept, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust.16 "This being so, I myself always strive to have a conscience without offense toward God and men. NKJV

Although the resurrection of Christ is admittedly one of the most central doctrines of the Christian faith, it is sometimes hard to see evidence of this from the relative lack of instruction or discussion about it. Clearly, there are a number of absolutely central doctrines in Christianity which if not established would undermine the entire religion. For instance, the incarnation, the sovereignty of God, eternal punishment just to name a few. I would contend however, that the resurrection is given particular importance in the Scriptures because no other doctrine is discussed with as much supremacy as it is. I would also contend that by considering the prevalence of the doctrine in the teaching of the Apostles that the doctrine was far more important to them than it is to us today. It is this premise, that if true, I would like to overturn; beginning with this church.

Remember though, the world would enjoy nothing more than to see the resurrection proved to be false. Since it occurred, there have been those who would change the story or attempt to discredit the accounts. But what they cannot explain is the changed lives of the once meek and unskilled Apostles who, if the resurrection were untrue, would have been martyred for a lie.

Jesus secured our justification.

Romans 4:19-25

19 And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. 20 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, 21 and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. 22 And therefore "it was accounted to him for righteousness." 23 Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, 24 but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification. (NKJV)
